The “What is AI?” Early Childhood module introduces young children (ages 5–7) to artificial intelligence (AI) through interactive activities and discussions. The lesson helps students distinguish between artificial (human-made) and natural objects using visual aids and sorting exercises. It explains intelligence in simple terms and connects human senses to machine sensors, demonstrating how AI-powered devices use cameras, microphones, and other sensors to “see” and “hear.” Students also engage in a hands-on activity where they design their own AI robot, reinforcing their understanding of how AI operates with human guidance. The lesson concludes with reflection questions and an optional family activity to extend learning beyond the classroom.
Students will discover how generative AI creates new content and examine its technology and its ethical impacts.
